A Teenager living the dangerous hate divide between two worlds

If you’re looking for something to pick up this Summer, there’s a good chance you won’t be able to put this down.

The Hate U Give is a New York Times best-seller which has been so highly received around the world it’s now being turned into a 20th Century Fox movie, starring Amandla Stenberg (The Hunger Games), K.J. Apa (Riverdale), Regina Hall (Girls Trip), Anthony Mackie (The Avengers: Infinity War), and Sabrina Carpenter (Girl Meets World).

So what’s the story?

Well, without totally giving it away, Starr Carter is a 16-year-old girl who finds herself stuck between two vastly different worlds - her upper-class posh high school and the poverty-stricken suburb where she lives.

After a traumatizing event that turns her life upside down, she has to figure out how to navigate and survive in both worlds.

The themes in this book are deep and compelling spanning across topics of teenage identity and self-development as well as bringing to light current day social issues in 21st Century America, such as poverty, discrimination, racism and police brutality.

Why you need to read Eleanor Oliphant is Completely Fine this Summer!

Someone gave this to me recently.

Not in the mood for fiction, and calling out time as my excuse, I politely declined.

But she’s a good mate. With good book taste. And she pretty much wouldn’t take no for an answer.

So, I took the book.

That night, I ran a bath, lit some candles, and gave the book’s first pages a crack.

15 minutes later = 4 hours later = still submerged = hot water topped up a few times ;) = I was hooked.

This is a book like no other. Hard to explain. Compelling, and repelling, strange and beautiful - Eleanor Oliphant is Completely Fine is a book out all on its own.

Since reading this I have passed it on to friends, colleagues, my daughters, their friends ….. it’s a human story, full of heart, and I think you’d be hard pressed to find someone who doesn’t get pulled into its pages.

The main character Eleanor is funny, troubled, unique, exasperating - and someone who will stay with you for a long, long time. Richly imagined, and out there amongst us.

Eleanor Oliphant is Completely Fine

Even if you're not into poetry, Rupi will find a way into your heart.

If you’re on Instagram, it’s likely you’ve come across the latest breed of insta poets, whose words and whimsy gather millions of followers who wait for the next drop of literary inspiration in their feeds.

Rupi Kaur is one of the current Insta fame poets who also happens to be a #1 New York Times bestselling author and illustrator of two collections of poetry.

She started drawing at the age of five when her mother handed her a paintbrush and said “draw your heart out”. Rupi views her life as an exploration of that artistic journey.

After completing her degree in rhetoric studies she published her first collection of poems ‘Milk and Honey’ in 2014. The internationally acclaimed collection sold well over a million copies gracing the New York Times bestsellers list every week for over a year, and it has since been translated into over 30 languages.
